Race Directors Advise to first time teams

If you are a new team to the Hana Relay, I would like to pass on a 10 tips that I hope will make the event more enjoyable.

  • 1. Rent your van early if you don't have one.
  • 2. Have some else drive. Get some one who is not running drive the van for the team.  This is the person who can keep track of everyone, make sure everyone is in the van and is a team manager. This person will make the whole team better.
  • 3. Pack a cooler
  • 4. Bring towels and extra cloth.
  • 5. Pack a first aid kit, just in case
  • 6. Decorate the van
  • 7. Obey the rules of the road. The road is not closed to cars, so keep left and get out of the way if needed.
  • 8. The race is more for fun than a competition. You can be as competitive as you want, but remember there are no big prizes to win. So just enjoy the run.
  • 9. Run your team in order. Send your strongest runner first and your weakest runner sixth.  This is the simplest way and will give everyone maximum rest between each leg. Your strongest runner will be running the hardest leg (13).  If you have good understanding of your teams' skill level, you can play around with the legs. You don't have to run everyone in order, but everyone must run at least 3 legs.
  • 10. Hang out at the finish.  Get a quick shower down at Hana bay and then hang out with everyone, get a massage, listen to music, eat, drink, and dance if you like. Music goes to 3:30pm.

See you at the start
